The unofficial Polish record was set by Anna Przybylak on June 16, 2024. The story of this feat can be viewed on Strava. During the challenge she rode an incredible 569 km, climbing to a cumulative elevation of 19,000 m.
I am 37 years old and since 2017 I have been riding long distances on a bicycle as an amateur - wanting to test my limits. Together with a friend, we rode 250 km from Lodz to Poznan, and that same year I completed my first 300 km at the Czestochowa Orbita event. Then, year after year, I increased both the maximum distance I was able to ride and the volume of training.
My milestones:
This time, at the same location as Anna, I want to try to take the next step in my passion and go beyond my previous approach by doing something for others at the same time. After every long marathon, my dad always asks - "what was that all for?" This time I would like to give him a meaningful answer!
For several months I followed a plan prepared specifically for me and for this event by Tomek Hruświcki from movementcare.pl. The training focused on building strength endurance, raising my lactate threshold and threshold work — all tailored to the effort our challenge demands.
At the peak of my preparation I was training up to 15 hours a week — not only on the bike, but also following a tailored gym programme that supported the cycling training and protected me from injuries and overload.
It was the first time I trained with a plan like this, and I recommend it to anyone who is hesitating — give it a try. I can see for myself that thanks to it I rode much more (and much smarter) than when I trained on my own, while feeling far less fatigue — because, as Tomek often says, quantity doesn't mean quality. On top of that there's the motivational push: once the training is written down, you don't skip it and you give it 100%.
The climb in Michałowice.
This means the climb must be ridden up and down 110 times, resulting in a total distance of approximately 792 km.
Interesting facts about this extraordinary event
Olympus Mons volcano on Mars stands at 21,900 m and is the tallest mountain in the Solar System. That is 5,000 m less than what we aim to achieve!
Each of our laps (242 m) is almost the full height of the Palace of Culture and Science (237 m). To reach the goal, we have to “ride up the Palace” about 112 times!
The stratosphere begins at an altitude of 10,000 m above sea level. Passenger aircraft fly lower, only reaching the boundary of the stratosphere!
With 26,544 zł you can buy over 500 meals for children in the foundation's canteens
The world record for balloon flight altitude is 21,027 m, set on November 26, 2005. The flight lasted 3 hours.
